CPT Domenico Lazzaro

We are honored to announced that the beneficiary of the 14th Annual SGT Samuel Nutter 5K is CPT Domenico Lazzaro. CPT Lazzaro is a graduate of the New Jersey Army National Guard Officer Candidate School Class 54 in 2011. Prior to this, CPT Lazzaro previously served in the 112th Infantry in the PA National Guard during which he was diagnosed with Hodgkin Disease Lymphoma. Following a 15-year break in service while he battled and ultimately overcame this rare form of cancer, CPT Lazzaro reenlisted in 2009 and obtained his commission as a Military Police Officer in August 2012.

As the Executive Officer of the 328th MP Company in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, his unit was deployed to Guantanamo Bay in 2015. Upon his return, CPT Lazzaro was selected as a specialty branch recruiter and became the commander of the 328th MP Company.

On June 11, 2017 during an annual training exercise, CPT Lazzaro fell from an obstacle course and broke 3 ribs and shattered his T8 and T9 vertebrae. Undergoing 12 hours of spinal surgery, CPT Lazzaro’s spine was fused from T8 to L1. While the injuries he sustained left him paralyzed from the waist down, the surgeon’s prognosis was that CPT Lazzaro would most likely never walk again.

Never one to give up, CPT Lazzaro spent 101 days in rehab following his surgery where he underwent extensive, rigorous physical therapy. We are pleased to announce that since sustaining his injuries, CPT Lazzaro has regained the ability to walk with assisted devices.

Please join us in honoring CPT Lazzaro, with his wife, Myra, and their two children, Hunter and Austin, for his service and commitment as he strives to make continued progress and to once again serve in the NJ Army National Guard. The 5K race event will take place on June 9, 2018 at the Army National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt, New Jersey. On behalf of the Sergeant Samuel Nutter Organization, we encourage you to join us in supporting the Lazzaro family and thank you for being an invaluable part of this cause.
